Bridging Policy and Practice: Business Innovation for Achieving Multiple SDGs in Developing Countries

Abstract

This paper aims to systematically explore and synthesize sustainable business strategies that effectively advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), drawing from empirical evidence and case studies from various emerging economies. It seeks to identify effective strategies, critical stakeholder roles, and common barriers to progress in these unique contexts. The study utilizes a structured literature review methodology, analyzing 65 peer-reviewed articles published within the last five years, focusing on corporate social responsibility (CSR), governance, and SDG operationalization. A mixed-methods approach was employed, extracting quantitative data on SDG reporting and performance metrics, and gathering qualitative insights through thematic analysis of case studies. The review identifies four key themes critical for SDG advancement: the significance of effective stakeholder communication for fostering trust and brand loyalty; the profound impact of robust governance structures (e.g., board diversity and leadership commitment) on sustainability outcomes; persistent challenges related to inconsistent regulatory environments and institutional support; and a post-COVID-19 shift toward innovative, technology-driven, and resilient strategies. The findings provide evidence-based insights for business leaders and policymakers in emerging markets, underscoring the necessity of strong internal governance, transparent reporting, and collaborative advocacy to overcome regulatory complexities and accelerate SDG integration. This paper offers a comprehensive and timely synthesis of recent empirical evidence on SDG-aligned business strategies specifically within the dynamic and challenging context of emerging economies, contributing to both academic understanding and practical guidance for sustainable development.
